Fourth Annual AΩE Turtle Trot 5K Race - Saturday, April 6, 2013

Our Annual Turtle Trot 5K Race is quickly approaching! Come out on Saturday, April 6 for a fun-filled morning of exercise to support GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) of PG County! (CLICK REGISTER NOW TO REGISTER!)

About the Turtle Trot

Picture

On March 27, 2010, we hosted our first annual “Turtle Trot” 5k Walk/Run to benefit GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science). GEMS is a local project that encourages the participation of girls in science and technology in Prince George’s County Middle Schools. In cooperation with UMD community outreach programs, GEMS offers after-school enrichment classes in math and science, field trips to math and science educational research centers, and family meetings that provide parents with the opportunity to engage in their children’s learning process. The race began in the Computer Science Parking lot, and featured a 3.2 mile course around Lake Artemesia, a beautiful lake and picnic area in College Park. The race had a huge turnout, and we were able to donate all of the funding to GEMS!

We are also planning a trip to a local PG County Middle School in April to spend some time with young girls who are part of the GEMS program! We're looking to bring some of our sisters to participate in a fun activity with the girls and show them how fun math and science can be!

AΩE Participates in Terp Thon!

Picture
For the first time in 2012, AΩE joined forces with Chi Phi and created a team for Terp Thon! Terp Thon is a student-run philanthropic organization hosted at the University of Maryland. Participants raise money and awareness for Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Last year, more than 1000 students on campus participated in the 12-hour long event that is held every year during the spring semester. As well, kids that have been treated at Children's National attend the event and spend time with the dancers in Cole Field House right on campus!

This year we had more sisters than last year participating and we had a blast dancing FTK (for the kids) on March 9, 2013!

Relay for Life: Date Auction and Race

Picture
Each year, we host a date auction to raise money for Relay for Life. Last year, we had over 45 sisters participate, and raised over $4,000 dollars! All of the money was donated to Relay for Life, a 12-hour long walk-a-thon to support cancer research. We set up camp at 6pm with a large tent, food, drinks, blankets, and board games to keep us company! Sisters came and went throughout the entire night, each doing their board to contribute to the walk-a-thon. At 6am when the sun rose, we were proud to be one of the teams still there. We can't wait for next year!

Come by Looney's Pub in College Park on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 7pm for this year's Date Auction!
