On March 27, 2010, we hosted our first annual “Turtle Trot” 5k Walk/Run to benefit GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science). GEMS is a local project that encourages the participation of girls in science and technology in Prince George’s County Middle Schools. In cooperation with UMD community outreach programs, GEMS offers after-school enrichment classes in math and science, field trips to math and science educational research centers, and family meetings that provide parents with the opportunity to engage in their children’s learning process. The race began in the Computer Science Parking lot, and featured a 3.2 mile course around Lake Artemesia, a beautiful lake and picnic area in College Park. The race had a huge turnout, and we were able to donate all of the funding to GEMS!
AΩE Participates in Terp Thon!
For the first time in 2012, AΩE joined forces with Chi Phi and created a team for TerpThon! TerpThon is a student-run philanthropic organization hosted at the University of Maryland. Participants raise money and awareness for Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Last year, more than 1000 students on campus pledged to stand for 12 hours for those who cannot. Kids that have been treated at Children's National also attend the event and spend time with the dancers in Cole Field House right on campus!
This year we plan to have even more sisters participating on our team Engineering Miracles and we look forward to dancing FTK (for the kids) on March 4th 2017!
Relay for Life: Date Auction and Marathon
Each year, we host a date auction to raise money for Relay for Life. Last year we were the top fundraisers at the University of Maryland and raised over $7,000! All of the money was donated to Relay for Life, a 12-hour long walk-a-thon to support cancer research. We set up camp at 12 pm with a large tent, food, drinks, blankets, and board games to keep us entertained! Sisters came and went throughout the entire night, each doing their job to contribute to the walk-a-thon.
Look for updates for our Date Auction in Spring 2017!
