Maryland Day Rubens Tube

Picture
Every year, we participate in University of Maryland's Maryland Day presentation. Maryland Day is a day designed to showcase all of the clubs, organizations, and societies at the University of Maryland. For Spring 2010, we designed a Rubens Tube that used fundamental Engineering concepts for development. The tube was made out of a long, plastic pipe with periodic holes punched along one side. One end of the pipe was attached to a frequency generator and the other to a propane tank. When we played music with varying frequency, a varying amount of gas escaped through the small holes on top, causing flames of different sizes to appear. Essentially, we created a live music synthesizer! Our Rubens Tube was a huge success, and we look forward to creating another fun, innovative way to showcase our sorority next year.

Engineering Field Day

Each spring, many of the Engineering organizations at the University of Maryland gathered to compete in a team building Field Day event! The day in Spring 2010 featured 10 different events, from flag football to basketball to three legged races. Our team took the FIRST PLACE prize this year, earning us $150 funding for our sorority. Way to go girls!

Bowling with ASME

Our Bowling with
ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) night is only one example of the many collaborative events we have had with other Engineering societies this year. As a fun way to relax from classes and exams, ASME invited us to share an event with them and hang out for an evening at TerpZone, our bowling alley. It was great fun with great friends, and we are glad to have developed a positive professional and social relationship with ASME!

Grilled Cheese Sales

Around the engineering building, one thing we are very well known for is our delicious snack stand! Right in the middle of one of the busiest engineering buildings, Glen L. Martin Hall, we sell Grilled Cheese and other snacks and refreshments for students in between classes. All the proceeds are used to fund sorority events, as well as other organizations we support, such as GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science). The Grilled Cheese stand is often a place where Sisters and friends of the sorority come to relax and hang out in between classes while getting a delicious bite to eat!
